MPIP: Overcoming barriers to open access for industry

MPIP open access.jpg

The pharmaceutical industry faces barriers to the ‘true’ open access publication of industry-funded research, with journals often applying different access and reuse conditions to such work. Now, as part of its continued drive to support transparency in publishing, Medical Publishing Insights & Practice (MPIP) aims to help authors overcome this issue, with the launch of a bespoke Open Access Journal Tool for Industry (OA-JTI).

The OA-JTI enables users to quickly locate journals offering open access publishing options for industry-sponsored research. Users can search by therapeutic area, publisher, copyright licence, and whether the publisher offers ‘gold’ open access for industry. In a recent blog post, MPIP outline how the tool forms part of a wider strategy to support increased industry adoption of open access by addressing two key issues:

  1. A general lack of understanding of what open access is, why it is important, and how it works
  2. A lack of easily accessible information on open access options available for publication of industry-funded research

As pharmaceutical companies are urged to do more to advocate open access, MPIP hope that — in combination with the recently published Open Access Reference Site and Quick Reference Guide — the OA-JTI will prove to be a useful resource for authors and industry alike.
